Caversham History

Caversham History

  • Star Road - one of the oldest Streets in Lower Caversham (formerly East Throp or even Lower Street?), this was once called Red Cow Lane in 1903 but is now named after the other pub, the one at the end.

  • Lower Caversham was called Lower Street in Thomas Pride's map of  (1790) (see map). Since 1911, Caversham fell within the region administered by Berkshire County Council and its successor, Reading Borough Council.

  • Caversham - From stone flint findings excavated from the bed of the River Thames it is thought that Caversham holds the oldest evidence of human settlements in England. Stone & Bronze age settlement evidence has also been found. Caversham was recorded as a permanent settlement in the Doomsday book of 1086 and its name came into use up to 300 years before that.
